Men's Tennis Earns First Win Of Season
01/30/2012 | Men's Tennis
The Spiders had a busy weekend, fighting to the finish in matches against Georgetown on Saturday and Delaware on Sunday.
After the Spiders dropped a decision to Georgetown in doubles play, Richmond duo Aaron Wicker and Jesse Feder rallied to win the No. 2 doubles match, 8-4, against Andrew Dottino and Shane Korber. Georgetown's Casey Distaso and Brian Ward fought to earn the doubles point by defeating freshmen Paul Nahon III and Dylan Trent, 8-3.
Earning Richmond's lone point of the match was junior Sebastien Fauchet with a win over Georgetown's Charlie Caris, 6-4, 6-3.
"The Georgetown match was a great learning experience," says Coach Ben Johnson. "It showed our few weaknesses and we are looking forward to this week of practice."
It took nearly six hours on Sunday afternoon for the Spiders to earn their first win of the season over the Blue Hens.
Despite a doubles win by Jesse Feder and Aaron Wicker, Richmond dropped the doubles point to Delaware, leaving it up to singles play to earn the win for the Spiders.
"We had some close losses in doubles," says freshman Paul Nahon III, "but we went out in singles with high energy and the desire to win. In the end we closed it out and our hard work and fitness paid off through the singles matches."
Jesse Feder, Dylan Trent and Paul Nahon III all produced wins in singles play. However, the winning point came down to a battle at No. 4 singles between Aaron Wicker and Delaware's Nolan Gelman. Wicker produced the winning point with a 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 decision to clinch the win for Richmond.
The Spiders return to action on February 3, 2012 against Liberty.
