UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team was edged 1-0 by its cross-city rival VCU on Sunday evening at UR Stadium.
"It was a really great game," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "It was exciting until the end. Both teams had great chances, but we just couldn't get a goal."
The first half ended in a stalemate after Spider keeper Kate Hudson stopped a one-on-one opportunity for the Rams and Richmond freshman forward Kristen Stalter nailed a shot from the outside that hit the crossbar.
Following the scoreless first half, VCU's Haylee Moorwood knocked a pass through the Richmond defense that teammate Pernilla Jansson was able to hit into the upper right corner to give the Rams (2-1-1) a 1-0 advantage in the 63rd minute of play.
The Rams held a 15-9 advantage over the Spiders in shots; however, the Spiders had four shots on goal while the Rams had three on target. Stalter led the Spiders in shots with four, while Jessie Wolfe followed with two.
"This is the best offense I've seen out of us in two years. I'm really encouraged by our progress. A couple players really emerged this game and we're really showing that we are capable of playing. VCU is just a good team. It was a good game."
Hudson registered two saves for the Spiders, while Lauren Hardison notched four saves in goal for the Rams.
The Spiders (0-3-0) will resume action on Tuesday, September 5 when they will make up the August 31 scheduled match with the James Madison Dukes at 7:00 p.m. at First Market Stadium. Live coverage will be available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.
