UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision to James Madison on Tuesday night at First Market Stadium. Freshman forward Kristen Stalter put in a pair of goals in Richmond's efforts, but the Dukes' three-goal run in a ten minute span proved to be too much for the Spiders.
"I was really impressed by some of the individuals on the team tonight," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "Stalter was a positive force for us, even besides the goals. Carter Blair also did a fabulous job for us at right back."
In the 22nd minute of action, Richmond's Stalter placed a free kick in the upper left corner, earning her first collegiate goal and giving the Spiders a 1-0 advantage.
Less than nine minutes later, James Madison's Sara Lebulski responded as she split the Spider defense for a breakaway and slid the ball past the Spider keeper for the equalizer.
The first half ended in a 1-1 stalemate; however, less than six minutes into the half, James Madison's Annie Lowry dropped a corner kick back to teammate Laura Hertz, who winded up for the score as they Dukes took a 2-1 lead.
The Dukes were able to find the back of the net two more times in the next 10 minutes. Corky Julien took a shot right outside the six that got passed the Spider keeper just 1:21 before teammate Kimmy Germain found the back of the net off an assist from Lowry as the Dukes took a 4-1 advantage over the Spiders.
Just 1:26 later, Richmond's Stalter responded with a goal off a breakaway as she narrowed the margin to 4-2, scoring her second goal of the contest and of her college career. With almost 30 minutes remaining of play, the Spiders were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and they ended the game with a two-goal deficit and the Dukes improved to 1-3-0.
"That 10 minute stretch was the worst soccer ever played at Richmond," said Albright. "We can't give up four goals and expect to win. I'm disappointed on our performance overall tonight - we are capable of playing at a higher level."
Richmond's Erin Iman registered six save in 61 minutes, while Kate Hudson recorded two saves in 29 minutes for the Spiders. Missy Reimert notched in three saves for the Dukes. The Dukes held a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The Spiders (0-4-0) will resume action this weekend at the Penn Invitational where they will play Princeton on Friday and Pennsylvania on Sunday.
