UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's tennis team continued its winning ways into Sunday's match with Bucknell University on the University of Richmond campus, as it captured its third-straight win in just as many days. Matt Stillwagon earned the tie-breaking win at No. 3 singles to help the Spiders to victory over the Bison, as they improved to 10-10.
The Stillwagon/Bobby McNally duo was unable to pick up a No. 1 doubles win; however, Doug Banker and Brett Waikart paired up at No. 2 for an 8-3 victory, while Chris Louis and David Berry paired up at No. 3 to pull through with a hard-earned 8-6 win to give the Spiders a 1-0 advantage going into singles action.
Louis took a win at No. 5 singles over Bucknell's Sandburg, while teammate Sommer won at No. 6 over the Bison's Brenner. Banker, McNally, and Belakhlef fought hard at the No. 1, 2, and 4 spots, respectively, but were unable to pick up wins for the Spiders, and the match came to a 3-3 tie with just Stillwagon and Lashnits remaining on the courts. Stillwagon came through for the Spiders and put Lashnits away in a hard-fought battle as the Spiders brought singles play to a 3-3 tie, ending the match 4-3.
"Stillwagon was undoubtedly the hero today," stated Richmond head coach Steve Gerstenfeld.
The Spiders will return to action this Friday with a conference match with Xavier at 2:30 p.m.
