UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman Carrie Holland (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored her first career goal to lead the University of Richmond women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over #7 University of Tennessee tonight at First Market Stadium. The Spiders improve to 2-3-1 while the Volunteers fall to 2-2-2.
The victory marks the second highest nationally-ranked opponent that the Spiders have defeated in the program's nine-year history. Previously, the Spiders topped #6 Clemson on September 12, 1999.
"This is just one game," commented Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "However, we showed that we could play collectively as a team and I'm so proud of our players."
Tennessee dominated play during the majority of the first half but Holland tallied the game-winner with less than one minute remaining in the period. At the 44:12 mark, she dribbled up the right side of the field and hit the 12-yard shot into the left corner of the net.
"Carrie Holland adds a new dimension to our attack. Early in the game, she gave our team hope that they could win this game."
Richmond split time in the net as senior Megan Cox (Springfield, Va.) made seven saves in the first half and junior Kelly Kolker (McLean, Va.) recorded two in the second period.
The Volunteers held an advantage in statistics, taking 24 shots to the Spiders' seven and recording seven corner kicks to Richmond's two.
The Spiders open conference play on Saturday, September 25 when they travel to the nation's capital and face George Washington.
