Davidson, N.C. - The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost a close match, 4-3, to Davidson Friday afternoon on Covington Courts in Davidson, N.C. This was the third straight meeting between the two teams that was decided by a final count of 4-3, with Richmond taking the previous two match-ups. With the loss, the Spiders' record falls to 1-9, while the Wildcats improve to 5-2.
Davidson earned the doubles point to jump on top of Richmond, 1-0. The Spiders would fight back to level the match behind straight set wins from senior David Donn (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior Jeppy Moss (Fredericksburg, Va.). The remaining three matches all went to three sets. Russ Burns put Davidson back on top after he downed Matt Stillwagon (Winchester, Va.), 6-0, in the deciding set. Sophomore Eric Hage (Dallas, Tex.) pulled away from freshman Porus Jetli in the third set of their affair to once again level the team score at 3-all. However, just moments later, Davidson's Bryan Stonestreet defeated junior Matthew Cabana (Charlotte, N.C.) with a backhand winner down the line.
The Spiders are back in action Saturday, February 21, 2004 when they face South Carolina at 11:00 a.m.
