UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va.-The Richmond women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead against #5 Virginia, but the Cavaliers responded with two unanswered goals to secure a 2-1 victory at First Market Stadium tonight. Richmond falls to 1-5-2 and Virginia improves to 8-1-1 on the season.
The Spiders netted the game's first goal when senior Bethany Shewmaker (Chapel Hill, N.C.) received a pass from senior Edda Gardarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) and lifted a shot over Virginia's Anne Abernethy. This goal, at 15:56, marked the end of Virginia's 417:56 shutout streak that extended over five matches.
The Cavaliers then scored consecutive goals by junior Lindsay Gusick, and sophomore Kelly Hammond at 28:01 and 40:57, respectively. Junior Olina Vidardottir had a chance to give the Spiders a 2-1 lead in the 33rd minute, but blasted her one-on-one chance left.
"I thought we played a great game against the fifth-ranked team," head coach Peter Albright said. "We had a couple of great chances. Our kids did a super job."
Senior goalkeeper Megan Cox had five saves while Abernethy made two. The Spiders were out-shot 16-7.
"This has been the story of the last five games," Albright added. "We play very well but come up a little bit short. I am very encouraged by our level of play. Going against these teams...it is fun."
Richmond returns to action at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3 when it faces Rhode Island at First Market Stadium.
