Men's Tennis Claims 5-2 Decision Over Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The University of Richmond men's tennis team defeated Liberty University Tuesday afternoon, 5-2, in a match played at the Esbenshade-Hershey tennis courts in Lynchburg, Va. Four Spiders won singles matches and the doubles team of sophomore David Donn (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman Jeppy Moss (Fredericksburg, Va.) continued to roll.
Richmond jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as it took two of three doubles matches to claim the point. Donn and Moss teamed to win at the No. 3 position, 8-1, as the tandem is now 9-1 in doubles action. Junior Danny Scrafford (Centreville, Va.) and freshman Derek Schwandt (Kennett Square, Pa.) combined to also pick up an 8-1 victory, this as No. 2 doubles.
The Spiders then went on to win four singles matches, including matches at the top two spots. Sophomore Niki Doll (Heidelberg, Germany) stormed back from a 4-1 first set deficit to win his No. 1 singles match, 6-4, 6-1. This particular match clinched the Spider's victory over the Flames. Donn picked up the victory at the No. 2 spot, as he improved to 5-1 at this singles position. Current Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Matthew Cabana (Plantation, Fla.) earned yet another victory at the No. 4 spot as he continued his solid play and improved to 11-4 at the No. 4 spot. Rounding out Tuesday's winners was Moss who blanked his opponent in No. 6 singles and improved to 12-4 on the spring.
Richmond (13-9) rounds out its season this Friday, April 5, at 2:30 p.m. versus James Madison in what will be senior Todd Parker's (Richmond, Va.) final home match for the Spiders. The match, to be played on the courts on the Richmond-side of campus, is the team's final tune-up before the Atlantic 10 Championships April 12-14 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
