CONWAY, S.C. - The University of Richmond began its spring trip on a positive note, defeating Coastal Carolina, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. The Spiders split the singles matches with the Chanticleers and won two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point.
The Spiders were victorious in the No.s 3, 4, and 6 positions in singles play as senior Todd Parker (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin), freshman Matthew Cabana (Plantation, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), and freshman Jeppy Moss (Fredericksburg, Va./Woodberry Forest School) all won their matches in straight sets. The three Richmond losses in singles competition were all close as two came in three sets and the other was lost in a super tie-breaker.
In doubles action, junior Danny Scrafford (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and freshman Derek Schwandt (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) won, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot and sophomore David Donn (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) teamed with Moss to win at the No. 3 position, 8-2, to earn the victory, and the point, in doubles play.
The win improves Richmond to 6-6 this spring. The Spiders continue their spring trip Thursday as they face The Citadel at 2:00 p.m.
