
Freshmen Trio Leads Men's Tennis Past ECU, 4-3

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The University of Richmond men's tennis team concluded a perfect spring trip Saturday morning as it edged East Carolina, 4-3, in Greenville, N.C. Freshmen Matthew Cabana (Plantation, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), Jeppy Moss (Fredericksburg, Va./Woodberry Forest School), and Derek Schwandt (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) were all victorious in their singles matches in helping give Richmond its third consecutive win and improve the team to 8-6.
The Spiders began the morning by taking two of three doubles matches in winning the doubles point. Schwandt teamed with junior Danny Scrafford (Centreville, Va./Centreville) for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles while Moss was paired with sophomore David Donn (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) in winning at the No. 3 position, also 8-3.
Despite dropping the top three singles matches, Richmond was victorious in the 4, 5 and 6 slots, with all three victories coming from freshmen in straight sets. Cabana won at the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-4, and Schwandt won at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-2, as each improved to 7-5 this spring. Moss improved to 8-2 this spring as he was victorious at the No. 6 position, 6-4, 6-3.
Richmond returns to action Friday, March 15, as the Spiders host Elon at 2:30 p.m. at the UR Tennis Complex.
