UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's tennis team was defeated by the Virginia Cavaliers Tuesday afternoon, 5-2, at the UR Tennis Complex. Freshmen Matthew Cabana (Plantation, Fla.) and Jeppy Moss (Fredericksburg, Va.) picked up the victories for the Spiders in singles action.
The Cavaliers began the day with a 1-0 lead as they swept all three doubles matches. The visitors then didn't leave any suspense for the second-half of the afternoon as they won three consecutive singles matches at the No.s 1, 3, and 5 positions to seal the win. The Spiders did battle though as they picked up wins in two of the remaining three singles matches.
Moss got the Spiders on the scoreboard as he defeated Gregory Alpert in No. 6 singles, 7-6, 6-3. The win was the freshman's 10th of the spring. Cabana then topped Jonathan Chou at the No. 4 spot, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, to improve his spring record to 10-8, including 9-4 in No. 4 singles. The two freshmen are tied with fellow freshman Derek Schwandt (Kennett Square, Pa.) for the most spring victories on the team. The final match of the day saw junior Danny Scrafford (Centreville, Va.) drop a grueling 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, decision in No. 2 singles as Richmond fell to Virginia, 5-2.
