UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va-- The University of Richmond men's tennis team (5-6, 2-0 Atlantic 10) dropped its home opener falling to American, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the UR Tennis Complex. The Eagles captured the doubles point and five of the six singles matches to claim the win, their fifth of the season.
The Spiders lone victory came at #3 singles as junior Danny Scrafford (Centreville, Va.) notched a three-set (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) win over AU sophomore Juan Jaysingh. The Spiders did not go quietly. Sophomore David Donn (East Longmeadow, Mass.) won the first set at No. 2 singles (3-6) but would falter down the stretch, dropping the last two sets to Eagles senior Josh Procaccci. The doubles team of Niki Doll and freshman Matt Cabana, teamed together for the first time, would easily win at the No. 1 spot. However, UR would waver at the two and three spots therefore dropping the doubles point.
Richmond returns to action hitting the road for its next three matches. They begin with a Wednesday, March 6 date at Coastal Carolina followed by a March 7 showing at the Citadel, both match times are 2:00 p.m.. The Spiders are at East Carolina on Saturday, March 9 at 10:00 a.m.
