ELON COLLEGE, N.C. - Despite holding a 3-1 advantage in the match, the University of Richmond men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Elon College at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
Richmond claimed the doubles point as freshman Nikki Doll (Heidelberg, Germnay/Heidelberg Gymnasium) teamed with senior Mark Scordo (Essex Falls, NN.J./West Essex) to defeat Richard Dutton and Justin Roberson, 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, the freshmen tandem of David Donn (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) and Jeremy Howard (Dartmouth, Mass./Moses Brown School) bested Peter Van Graafeiland and Chad York, 8-6.
The Spiders built on their advantage by earning singles victories at the No. 4 position with Spider junior Todd Parker (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) defeating Roberson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Spider sophomore Dan Scrafford (Centreville, Va./Centreville) was also a straight-sets winner over Mike Prelec, 6-4, 6-0 at six singles.
However, Richmond could not close the contest as Elon captured a victory at No. 5 singles (6-1, 6-2) and captured the top three singles points, including a 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) clincher at the No. 2 spot.
Richmond returns to action, facing Davidson College on Sunday, February 11 at 1 p.m.
