Spiders Knock Off UMass, 2-0, In Women's Soccer

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond handed the #28 University of Massachusetts its first Atlantic 10 loss of the season, a 2-0 decision Friday night at First Market Stadium. With the win, the Spiders improve to 5-3-0 in the conference and 7-7-1 overall. The Minutewomen fall to 7-1-0 in the Atlantic 10 and 10-3-0 overall.
Richmond senior forward Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor) netted her third goal of the season in the 12th minute of the contest. UMass goaltender Julie Podhrasky jumped out of the box to defend a streaking Gincel who slid the ball into the left corner of the empty net to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead.
The Spiders added an insurance goal in the 79th minute when sophomore Jessie Marino (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) sent a 15-yard shot lofting over Podhrasky. The score was Marino's first of the season.
Richmond senior keeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) posted her sixth shut out of the season and 29th of her career. She made two saves in the victory. Teammate Natalie Stallings (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) contributed two defensive saves in the box to preserve the victory.
The Spiders continue Atlantic 10 play on Sunday, October 28 hosting the Rhode Island Rams on Senior Day. The match begins at 1:00 at First Market Stadium.
