UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 13th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers overpowered the Richmond Spiders, 3-0 in women's college soccer action Wednesday night at First Market Stadium. Richmond falls to 5-6-1 overall while UVA improves to 10-2-1 on the season.
The Cavaliers got on the board in the 14th minute when sophomore Sarah Lane led a breakaway, firing a direct shot at Richmond keeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) who blocked the ball but was unable to control Lane's tap in the box, the eventual game-winner. Virginia would continue its offensive pressure on the Spiders, as nine minutes later first year player Lindsay Gusick scored the first of her two goals of the evening, the freshman's eighth and ninth goals of the season.
The Spiders return to Atlantic 10 conference play this weekend with contests at Fordham (Oct. 19) and at La Salle (Oct. 21).
