PISCATAWAY, N.J. - University of Richmond freshman midfielder Jessie Marino (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) scored two goals, including the game-winning strike in overtime to carry the Spiders women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Rutgers at the Rutgers DoubleTree Classic.
After dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to Syracuse on Friday, September 15, Richmond responded with a one-goal decision against the tournament host Scarlet Knights. Richmond played its fifth consecutive one-goal match to open the 2000 campaign. With the triumph, the Spiders improve to 3-2-0 overall, while Rutgers falls to 3-2-1 on the campaign.
On the decisive goal, Marino chipped in a crossing pass from five yards out at 96:18 of the extra session. Sophomore midfielder Jenna Merriam (Vorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) set up the play by sending a pass from just inside the penalty area to Marino, who deposited the game-winner.
Off of a Rutgers misplay in their own defensive third, Marino opened the scoring at the 38:05 mark, netting her first collegiate goal from close range off of an assist from freshman midfielder Molly Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin). Rutgers knotted the contest just before halftime when sophomore Jessica Budholt drilled a 30-yard shot into the back of the net.
Spider junior goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) played all 90 minutes, recorded seven saves and notched her third win of the season.
Richmond will return to action on Wednesday, September 20, opening its Colonial Athletic Association slate at East Carolina. Match time is slated for 4 p.m.
