WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary junior forward Avery Willis scored off of an assist from sophomore forward Laura Pawlow at 102:46 of the first overtime to lift the host Tribe to a 1-0 decision over No. 22-ranked Richmond in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action tonight at Busch Field.
The Spiders sustained its first CAA loss of the season, slip to 4-1-0 in the conference and 9-4-0 overall. William and Mary improves to 10-4-0 and 5-1-0 in league play. The setback marked Richmond's first road loss of the season.
On the decisive strike, Willis controlled a through ball from Pawlow and, from a difficult angle a pace outside the penalty area, snuck a shot just inside the near post for the game-winner. Spider 'keeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) played brilliantly throughout, making six stops on 16 Tribe shots on goal. She also stymied several William and Mary scoring opportunities in regulation to help force the extra session.
The Tribe now owns a 32-0-1 record against CAA foes at Busch Field since 1992, with the only blemish being a 0-0 tie versus Richmond on September 27, 1998.
"I am very proud of how our kids played. I could not have asked them to play any harder. They left everything they had out there on the field," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "William & Mary is a good team and you have to give them credit. We now look forward to an important game on Friday at home."
Richmond returns to action on Friday, September 13, hosting Dartmouth at 7 p.m. at UR Soccer Complex on the campus of the University of Richmond.
