RICHMOND, Va. - Clemson freshman forward Lindsay Browne scored at the 43:56 mark to pace the No. 2-ranked Tigers to a 1-0 decision over Richmond in women's soccer action today at UR Soccer Complex. The Tigers remain unbeaten at 12-0-0 overall and continue to perform well in close matches, raising their record to 8-0-0 in one-goal decisions this year. The Spiders, meanwhile, see their four-match winning streak end and drop to 6-3-0 on the season.
On the decisive goal, Tiger sophomore back Cindy Mullinix played a corner kick into the penalty area. The ball came loose on the right side of box where Brown chipped home a shot into the back of the net from five yards away just 1:04 prior to intermission.
Spider junior keeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) was brilliant in the nets, playing all 90 minutes and posting nine saves. Clemson used the speed of its forwards and talented midfield corps to outshoot Richmond, 22-11. However, with Richmond playing the highest-ranked team it has ever faced in the program's five-year history, Samuhel and senior back Jaclyn Raveia (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) stepped up and turned away several Tiger scoring opportunities.
The Spiders fired eight shots in the second half and narrowly missed several scoring opportunities in the final 45 minutes of play.
Richmond plays their fourth contest of a six-match home stand on Wednesday, October 4, resuming Colonial Athletic Association action against James Madison at 7 p.m.
