RICHMOND, Va. - In a matchup of two teams unbeaten in Colonial Athletic Association play this season, the No. 25-ranked University of Richmond women's soccer team posted a 3-2 win over James Madison tonight at UR Soccer Complex. With the victory, the Spiders are off to a program-best 4-0-0 start in league play and remain atop the conference standings. James Madison, meanwhile, falls to 4-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 in league action.
After a scoreless first half, senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal) got things going for Richmond at the 49:51 mark, slipping in a shot from seven yards away, beating JMU 'keeper Suzanne Wilson to the far post. Sands delivered another goal at 55:03, depositing a crossing pass from sophomore midifelder Jenna Merriam (Vorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) from five yards out. For Sands, the program's all-time leading goals (46) and points scorer (110), it was the tenth multi-goal match of her career. Merriam added to Richmond's lead, blistering a shot that deflected off of the crossbar, before controlling the loose return and drilling home her team-leading third goal and eleventh point of the season.
James Madison chipped into the Spiders' lead at 64:13 when junior midfielder Jamie Miller converted on a penalty kick. The Dukes closed the margin to a single goal at 73:20 when sophomore forward Teri Joyce chipped in an eight-yard shot on a play set up by senior forward Beth Burgess.
