RICHMOND, Va. - For a second straight season, the No. 25-ranked University of Richmond women's soccer team has claimed its host event, the Wachovia Classic. Richmond captured this year's tournament title with a 2-1 victory over Radford this afternoon at the University of Richmond Soccer Complex.
Winners of seven of their last eight matches, the Spiders improve to a program best-ever 9-3-0 on the campaign while Radford slips to 3-10-1 overall.
Richmond sophomore midfielder Jenna Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) opened the scoring at the 23:04 mark, converting a corner kick that was mishandled by Radford 'keeper Samantha Woods. With her 13 points on the season, Merriam is now tied for the team lead with senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal).
The Spiders enjoyed a 2-0 lead at intermission after junior midfielder Kate Dougan (West Kingston, R.I./South Kingston) headed in a perfectly played crossing pass from freshman midfielder Molly Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) at 37:37. Richmond senior back and tournament defensive most valuable player Jaclyn Raveia (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) helped orchestrate the play, sending a through ball into the right corner for Rettig, who set up the ensuing strike.
Radford freshman forward Kate Hensman put the Highlanders on the board at the 88:07 mark, drilling in a six-yard shot off of an assist from junior forward Susan Melanson to make the final 2-1.
Richmond controlled the contest's tempo throughout, outshooting the Highlanders 30-10. After creating numerous scoring chances for the team's forwards throughout tournament play, Richmond's midfield corps comprised of freshman Jessie Marino (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary), junior Meredith Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton), Rettig and sophomore Natalie Stallings (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) garnered all-tournament team recognition. In addition to Raveia taking home defensive MVP recognition, Sands was named the Wachovia Classic's offensive MVP.
First place atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings will be on the line on Wednesday, October 11 when the Spiders, 4-0-0 in conference action, meet William and Mary, 4-1-0 in the CAA, in Williamsburg at 7 p.m.
