Newman's Answer Leads to 1-1 Tie for Soccer

RICHMOND, Va. — Emma Newman scored less than two minutes after American took an early lead as the Richmond women's soccer team battled the Eagles to a 1-1 tie Thursday at President's Field at River Road.
American opened the scoring in the eighth minute on a goal from Mia De Villegas-Decker, but Newman answered just 95 seconds later. Kingsley Hughes volleyed a ball into the top of the box, where Morgane Zinn flicked it goalward to a streaking Newman, who buried it from point blank range.
Zinn and Hughes were credited with assists, while Newman collected her first goal of the season after leading the Spiders with six goals and 14 points as a freshman last year.
Richmond moved to 14-6-1 all-time vs American and remained unbeaten on the season at 1-0-1. 2026 is the third time in four seasons under coach Adam Denton that UR has been unbeaten through two games.
The Spiders controlled much of the match, outshooting American 16-9, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Richmond also held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks and finished with 56% of the possession. Hughes led all players with five shots, while Newman registered three.
Veronica Rrapi made one save in the opening half before Isabel Seifert took over in goal after halftime and stopped the only shot on goal she faced.
Richmond will return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. against Queens at President's Field at River Road.
