Spider Baseball’s Three-Run Eighth Holds off GW in Series Opener

Richmond, now 28-21 on the year and 15-10 in A-10 play, and George Washington, 18-30 on the season and 9-16 in league action, return to Pitt Field for a 1 p.m. game two contest tomorrow. Prior to the start of the game, UR will hold Senior Day festivities, beginning at 12:25 p.m.
GW got on the board in the first inning off UR starter Chase Topolski, taking advantage of a walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI double for a single run.
Dylan Winebrenner took back the lead with a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the first. Michael Elko, who reached with a base hit then advanced to third on a failed pick off by the GW pitcher, scored on the play.
Topolski settled and retired the Revs in order in back-to-back innings. GW tied the game in the fourth at 2-2, tallying a run on a ground out, a base hit and a walk.
Elko, on his second of three hits of the game in the fifth, brought in Noah Haught who led off the frame with a double down the right field line and give UR a 3-2 lead.
GW again tied the game in the sixth, taking advantage of a double, a walk and a base hit while Toploski collected three of his seven strikeouts on the day. Topolski allowed three runs on four this and three walks over six innings of work.
Sean Scanlon quickly took back the lead for Richmond in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run over the right field wall for his sixth blast of the season.
Justin Gay took over for Topolski on the mound in the seventh. Gay went one and two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs in the seventh on three hits, one walk and struck out two.
After Bijan Anvar got the final out of GW's eighth inning, Trevor Dosenbach got plunked, then Haught moved him up with a base hit to left. Dosenbach then scored on Chris Schaller's base hit to left center to give Richmond a 6-5 lead. Elko got plunked to load the bases before Winebrenner sent a sharp base hit to left for two insurance runs, at 8-5.
Anvar got the first out of the top of the ninth before handing the ball over to Dom Ruggiero. He got a strikeout and a fielder's choice ground out to capture his fifth save of the season.
