Spider Baseball Takes Game Two Against Davidson

DAVIDSON, NC – The University of Richmond baseball team got two strong pitching performances on the mound by Joey Giordano and reliever Chayse Gruber Saturday afternoon, capturing the second game of the Atlantic 10 Conference series, 8-3.
Richmond, now 26-20 on the year and 13-10 in league play, returns to Wilson Field for the series finale against Davidson, 24-20 on the season and 15-8 in conference action. First pitch is set for 1 PM.
Giordano collected his 11th victory after tossing five innings. He allowed one run on four hits, three walks, one hit batter and struck out six. Chayse Gruber came on in relief, tossing four innings and collected his third save on the season. Gruber allowed two runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batter while striking out three.
Richmond got on the board first when RJ Johnson Jr. pushed in Noah Haught, who drew a walk to reach, from second with a base hit to right.
The Spider added on in the fifth. Haught and Evan Wilson drew back-to-back walks to start the frame. Chris Schaller reached on a bunt to the pitcher who threw it wildly towards first, allowing Haught to score. Johnson Jr. got hit by the pitch before Dylan Winebrenner followed with a two RBI double to left center to push UR's lead to 4-0.
Davidson got a run back in the bottom of the frame, connecting two base hits and a walk.
In the sixth inning, Ryan Recio and Sean Scanlon both got hit then moved up on Aidan O'Keefe's sacrifice bunt. Recio then scored on a fielder's choice to make it 5-1. Wilson pushed in two runs on a double down the right field line. Winebrenner picked up Wilson for the Spiders eighth run of the game with a base hit to left.
Davidson tallied two runs off Gruber in the bottom of the sixth. Gruber settled down on the mound, allowing only three Wildcats to reach over the next three innings.
