DAVIDSON, NC – The Richmond Baseball team battled back to take the lead in the top of the ninth, but were unable to quiet the Davidson offense, falling 6-5 to the Wildcats Friday night at Wilson Field.
Game two of the Atlantic 10 Conference series has been moved to a 3 PM start due to inclement weather in the forecast.
Richmond (25-20, 12-10 A-10) answered Davidson's single run in the third. Aidan O'Keefe led off the inning with an infield base hit then scored Richmond's first run of the game from third on Noah Haught's double to center field. Haught was out at third trying to stretch for an extra base.
Davidson picked up another single run off UR starter Chase Topolski in the fifth. Topolski scattered four runs on six hits, one walk and seven strikeouts over six and a third of an inning of work.
RJ Johnson Jr. tied the game at two all in the sixth inning on a 425-foot solo home run to deep center field for his fifth home run of the season.
Davidson held a two-run lead, 4-2, until the top of the ninth. Evan Wilson collected his third hit of the game and Dylan Winebrenner extended his reach base streak to 31 games with a base hit of his own with two outs in the inning. Trevor Dosenbach replaced Winebrenner on the base paths.
Johnson Jr. picked up another RBI with a base hit through the right side to score Wilson to make it 3-4. RJ Rickabaugh extended the inning with a base hit to right to score Dosenbach from third. Chris Schaller put the ball in play and his speed on the base paths caused a Wildcat miscue and pushed in Johnson Jr. to take the lead.
Justin Gay followed Topolski on the mound, tossing one and two thirds of an inning of action. He walked one, struck out one and let one inherited runner to score in the seventh.
After Gay retired the Wildcats in order in the eighth, Dominic Ruggiero took over on the mound in the ninth. Ruggiero allowed two runs, on two hits, two hit batters, two strikeouts and one walk, that forced in the game-winning run for the Wildcats.
