Spider Baseball Offense Explodes to Collect Series from La Salle

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Richmond baseball team collected its second-straight Atlantic 10 Conference series Friday afternoon, defeating La Salle 16-7 at DeVincent Field. The Spiders, 16-15 on the year and 5-6 in league play, will go for the series sweep of La Salle Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch at DeVincent Field. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

Evan Wilson put the Spiders on the board two pitches into the game with a solo home run to right field for his third home run of the season. Continuing the hit parade, Michael Elko and Dylan Winebrenner both got base hits, while Sean Scanlon doubled. Winebrenner scored the Spiders second run of the first inning on a ground out.

Richmond added three more runs in the second inning. Grant Kenneedy and Noah Haught had back-to-back base hits to center. Kennedy scored on a ground out and Michael Elko bought in Haught with a base hit of his own. Winebrenner launched his ninth home run of the season, a two-run blast, to straight away center field to push the Spiders lead to 6-1.

In the top of the fourth and with the bases loaded, RJ Johnson Jr forced in a run by drawing a walk. Aidan O'Keef doubled in two more runs to give UR a 9-2 lead.

UR starter Joey Giordano moves to 7-0 on the season. Giordano went five and two-thirds of an inning, scattering seven runs, six earned, on seven hits, two walks, one hit batter and four strikeouts. Bijan Anvar tossed two scoreless innings, working around one hit, one walk and two hit batters. Justin Gay wrapped up the final one and a third of an inning, getting three fly outs and a strikeout to end the game.

La Salle got within two runs, at 9-7, before the Richmond offense exploded for six runs in the eighth. Khristopher Morris brought in Elko from second with a base hit for the first run. Ryan Recio scored Dylan Winebrenner, who was intentionally walked for a second time in the game, with his own base hit. After O'Keefe drew a walk, Chris Schaller launched his first collegiate home run to deep center field for a three-run blast. Kennedy kept the scoring going, drawing a walk then scoring from first on Noah Haught's double to left.
