Spider Baseball Extends Win-Streak to Five, Defeats Mason 11-3

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team won the squad's fifth straight game and collected a third-straight Atlantic 10 Conference series with an 11-3 victory over George Mason at Spuhler Field.

Richmond, now 19-15 on the year and 8-6 in league action, goes for the series sweep of George Mason, 15-17 on the season and 8-6 in conference play, Sunday with first pitch set for noon on ESPN+.

Joey Giordano collected his eighth victory of the season after tossing six and one-third of an inning of action. He lost his no hitter in the seventh, scattering two runs, one earned, on three hits, four walks, two wild pitches and struck out four.

The Spiders got on the board in the top of the second. RJ Johnson Jr. led off the frame with a double to left center, took third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by RJ Rickabaugh.

The UR offense ignited in the top of the fourth. Sean Scanlon doubled then scored on a miscue by George Mason to give UR a 2-1 lead. Chris Schaller followed with a two-run home run to left field, putting Richmond up 4-1.

In the fifth, after back-to-back walks, Dylan Winebrenner brought in both with a double to right field and took third on the throw home. Johnson Jr. put the Spiders up 8-1 with a two-run home run with a blast to right field.

The Spiders added on in the eighth when Noah Haught sent the ball back through the middle to score Reid Downs from second. Then in the ninth inning, Schaller picked up his third and fourth RBI of the game with a double down the left field line.

Chayse Gruber finished the final two and two-thirds of an inning on the mound. He allowed one run on two hits and one hit batter.
