FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team put together a late inning rally to defeat George Mason, 4-2, Friday in the Atlantic 10 Conference series opener at Spuhler Field.
Richmond, now 18-15 on the year and 7-6 in league play, and George Mason, 15-16 on the season and 8-5 in conference action, return to Spuhler Field for game two Saturday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
GMU had 2-0 lead by the third inning, allowed by UR starter Chase Topolski. Topolski tossed a season high seven innings, holding GMU to just two runs on three hits, four walks and three strikeouts to collect his third-straight victory.
In the sixth, Sean Scanlon put the Spiders on the board, scoring Michael Elko on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Scanlon got the scoring going in the top of the eighth as well. With the bases loaded, Scanlon brought in Evan Wilson with a ground out. After RJ Johnson Jr. was intentionally walked to load the bases again, reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Chris Schaller brought in Elko and Dylan Winebrenner with a base hit to the right center gap to give UR a 4-2 lead.
Bijan Anvar, taking over for Topolski, got the first outs in the bottom of the eighth before passing the rock to Dom Ruggiero. Ruggiero collected his third save of the season and a strike out as he retired all four batters he faced.
