BRONX, NY – The Richmond baseball team scored first and scored last to defeat the Fordham Rams, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Houlihan Family Park in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
Richmond, 12-11 on the year and 1-4 in league play, and Fordham, 10-11 on the season and 3-1 in conference action, return to Houlihan Park Sunday for the rubber match of the series. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
Both starting pitchers were dueling to start the game, but Richmond struck first with an RBI base hit by Chris Schaller to score Sean Scanlon from second.
Richmond starter Joey Giordano had a no-hitter through three and two-thirds of an inning but stranded the runners. Fordham got on the board in the fifth inning, tagging Giordano with two unearned runs on two hits and a UR miscue to take a 2-1 lead. The Rams extended their lead to 3-1 in the seventh, scoring a run on a bunt single in front of the mound.
Richmond roared back in the top of the eighth. With one out, Kennedy singled through the middle then moved up to second on a wild pitch. RJ Johnson Jr. hit his third home run of the season to right field to tie the game at 3-3.
Dylan Winebrenner brought in the go-ahead run with a base hit to left field, pushing in Reid Downs from second. Downs took over on the base paths for pinch-hitter RJ Rickabaugh after he drew a walk.
Bijan Anvar took over for Giordano with two outs in the eighth. Anvar retired all four batters he faced to collect his first save of the season. Giordano moves to 5-0 on the season with the win.
