Richmond, Va. — The University of Richmond Department of Athletics hosted its annual Scholar-Athlete Breakfast on Monday morning, honoring 107 Spider student-athletes who achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher after at least two semesters.
Representing every Richmond program, the Scholar-Athletes combined for an impressive 3.76 GPA and account for nearly one-third of the University's student-athlete population. Of the 107 honorees, 83 have competed within the past two weeks — some as recently as yesterday and others preparing to compete tomorrow — underscoring the significant balance required to excel both academically and athletically.
Team academic honors went to men's golf and swimming & diving for posting the highest GPAs among their respective programs.
Several major individual awards were also presented during the event.
Katie Chignell (swimming & diving) was named the School of Arts & Sciences Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A double major in health studies and psychology, Chignell owns the program's sixth-best all-time mark in the 400 IM and is part of Richmond's record-setting 400 free relay team.
Maggie Doogan (women's basketball) earned Jepson School of Leadership Studies Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. A leadership studies and business administration major, Doogan holds Richmond's single-game scoring record with 48 points — also the Atlantic 10 Conference record — and recently set the program's single-season scoring mark. She currently ranks second all-time in program history in scoring.
Kiley Fitzgerald (soccer) received the Robins School of Business Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. An accounting major from Glen Allen, Fitzgerald carries the highest GPA among graduating seniors in the Robins School of Business. She was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team and appeared in all 70 games during her career.
Phoebe Rubio (women's cross country/track & field) was named Richmond's Provost's Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Athletics Department's overall Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A biochemistry and molecular biology major with a minor in health studies, Rubio holds the highest cumulative GPA in the senior class. She recently earned a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for research on developing cleavable linkers — molecules that enable controlled drug release — and placed fifth in the mile at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships this past weekend.
On the team side, men's golf, led by head coach Adam Decker, posted a 3.51 GPA for the year and recently captured first place among 20 teams at the Loyola Intercollegiate in Arizona. The program has maintained a 3.64 average team GPA over the past six-plus years.
Swimming & diving, under head coach Matt Barany, recorded a 3.77 GPA to earn its fifth consecutive academic team title. Over that span, the Spiders have maintained a 3.75 average GPA. The team also captured the 2026 Atlantic 10 Championship two weeks ago, marking the program's 13th conference title under Barany since 2006.
