Spider Baseball Battles Back, Falls Short in A-10 Opener

RICHMOND, Va. – Dylan Winebrenner hit two home runs in the eight-run bottom of the third, but the Richmond baseball team fell 11-9 to the Saint Joseph's Hawks in the squad's Atlantic 10 Conference series opener at Pitt Field.

The Spiders (10-8, 0-1) and Hawks (6-9, 1-0) return to Pitt Field for the second game of the series Saturday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. There will not be an ESPN+ stream.

The Hawks jumped on UR starter Glenn Smith, tagging him with six runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batter in the first inning. SJU added on three more runs in the top of the second on a wind-aided three-run home run and two more walks. Smith went three innings on the mound for UR.

Sean Scanlon, serving as the designated hitter, put the Spiders on the board with his second home run of the season in the bottom of the second.

Richmond bats exploded in the third. Winebrenner led off the frame with a solo shot to left field. Michael Elko reached on a bunt singled then scored from first on Ryan Recio's double to right center. Grant Kennedy followed with his own double to bring in Recio for the Spiders third run of the frame and make it 9-4.

With the bases loaded, catcher's interference pushed in a fifth run. Winebrenner followed with a massive grand slam to left to tie the game at 9-all for his second home run of the game and sixth of the season.

Chase Topolski (0-1) took over on the mound in the fourth. He got tagged for two runs on a two-out base hit to center that pushed in runners that reached on a walk and a hit batter. Topolski finished with five scoreless frames in his six-inning outing in relief, with a career-high 10 strikeouts, including striking out the side in the eighth.

UR let 11 on base including two in the eighth inning Elko doubled to lead off the frame and moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt by Recio, but was stranded in scoring position.
