02/13/2026 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond baseball battled back to tie the game at 3-all in the sixth inning against Monmouth Friday, Feb. 13 at Pitt Field but were unable to scratch runs across in the ninth to fall 4-3.
Richmond (0-1) will host Monmouth (1-0) for a doubleheader Saturday at Pitt Field due to inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday. First pitch of game one is set for 10 AM, with game two following approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one. There will be no stream on ESPN+ for either game.
The Spiders were able to jump on the Hawks reliever in the bottom of the sixth inning. RJ Johnson led off with a double and Dylan Winebrenner was hit by a pitch to put on with no outs for Sean Scanlon's sacrifice bunt to move a base. Khris Morris came up with a base hit to left to score Johnson for the first run of the inning. Michael Elko picked up Winebrenner the very next pitch with a base hit that froze the shortstop to tie the game at 3-all.
The squad's relievers traded scoreless seventh and eighth innings. UR's Justin Gay took over for Chayse Gruber in the eighth after Gruber and the Spider defense got out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout and a pop-up to third.
Gay struck out two and induced a fly ball to retire the Hawks in order in the eighth for his first appearance as a Spider. He collected three more strikeouts in the ninth, but the Hawks were able to capitalize on a leadoff double to take the lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, freshman Evan Wilson collected his first collegiate hit as a pinch hitter with two outs. Fellow rookie Chris Schaller snagged his first stolen base but was stranded.
Monmouth took a quick 1-0 lead in the first, then added two more runs in the third on four base hits.
The Spiders got on the board in the fifth inning. Elko led off with a double and scored on Trevor Dosenbach base hit to left.
Richmond starter Jackson Hinchliffe allowed three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts over 3.2 innings of work. Chayse Gruber tossed three scoreless frames, scattering two hits and three walks with a strikeout. Gay (0-1) tossed the final two innings allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts.
