Second-Half Surge Lifts Richmond Past St. Bonaventure

RICHMOND, Va. – Maggie Doogan recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds as the University of Richmond women's basketball team used a dominant second half to defeat St. Bonaventure 75-52 Wednesday night inside the Robins Center, extending its win streak to 10 games. With the victory, the Spiders improved to 21-4 overall and 11-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play while moving to 11-1 at home. The Bonnies fell to 14-12 overall and 5-9 in league play.

How It Happened
St. Bonaventure opened the game with a three-pointer before Rachel Ullstrom answered with one of her own. The Bonnies added a jumper, but Maggie Doogan connected from beyond the arc to give Richmond a 6-5 edge. After two free throws from Ullstrom, St. Bonaventure cut the margin to one on a layup. Doogan pushed the lead back to three, yet the Bonnies continued to respond and trimmed the deficit to 10-9 at the 5:25 mark. Alicia Newell added a layup before St. Bonaventure tied the game at 12 with a three-pointer to close the first quarter.
Ullstrom opened the second quarter with a triple to put Richmond back in front, but the Bonnies answered again to make it 15-14. After several lead exchanges, Doogan scored four straight points to give the Spiders a 24-23 advantage. A three-pointer from Ava Persichetti stretched the lead to four, but St. Bonaventure used a 9-0 run to build a 32-27 edge. Ullstrom knocked down a three-pointer in the final minute of the half to pull Richmond within 32-30 at the break.
Doogan tied the game and retook the lead for the Spiders with an and-one play to open the third quarter, and Newell followed with a layup to give Richmond a 35-32 lead. The Bonnies trimmed the margin to two at the free throw line, but Ullstrom answered with a layup to maintain control. After St. Bonaventure cut the lead to 40-39, Ullstrom buried a three-pointer at the 3:42 mark to spark a decisive run. Tierra Simon and Newell combined for five late points as Richmond closed the quarter on an 8-0 spurt to take a 48-39 advantage into the fourth.
Richmond pulled away in the final period, opening on a 9-0 run as Doogan, Newell and Ullstrom all scored to extend the lead to 58-39. The Bonnies briefly stopped the run at the charity stripe, but Ally Sweeney answered with two free throws to push the margin to 20. Doogan and Persichetti hit back-to-back three-pointers, and Simon and Newell added layups to stretch the lead to 70-45. Aneisha Scott added a jumper with 1:39 remaining, and Annika Manthy recorded her first collegiate point at the free throw line to seal the home victory, 75-52.

Notes on the Game
- Maggie Doogan led Richmond with 23 points, marking her 36th career 20-point game. She added 11 rebounds for her 20th career double-double and ninth of the season, along with seven assists and one steal. She now has 1,980 career points, 20 shy of 2,000.
- Rachel Ullstrom scored 21 points for her 18th career 20-point game. She added five rebounds and a team-high three steals. Ullstrom knocked down five three-pointers, her fourth game this season with at least five.
- Alicia Newell added 11 points for her sixth career double-digit scoring performance and first since Jan. 14 at Dayton. She also contributed five rebounds, one assist and two steals.
- Ally Sweeney dished out six assists, moving her career assist total to 240.
- Annika Manthy recorded her first collegiate point and her first career block, Richmond's lone block of the game.
