WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The Richmond Spiders women's golf team took no time to reach midseason form in the season-opening Tribe Invitational Monday, combing for a 4-over 580 in Rounds 1 and 2 of the event to take a 24-shot lead into Tuesday's final round. UR currently occupies the first four spots on the individual leaderboard, with senior Hannah Lydic setting the pace at 3-under par (141).
"This event is full circle for me," said Lydic, who made her college debut by winning the event with a program-record score of 11-under par (205) at this event in 2022. "There's lot of emotion for me playing Kingsmill as a senior knowing our team and my individual history here."
The Spiders combined for a 5-over 293 in Round 1 Monday morning then really separated themselves from the rest of the five team field with a 1-under 287 in Round 2, equaling the third-best team round in program history. With 18 holes remaining, Richmond's nearest competitor is Marshall at 28-over par (604), 24 shots behind UR's pace.
At 3-under par, Lydic, the reigning Atlantic 10 individual champion, is three shots clear of teammate junior Maya Beasley, who shot rounds of 74 (+2) and 70 (-2) Monday.
Sophomore Katie Magner shot a 1-under 71 in Round 2, matching the lowest round of her career, and is in third place at 3-over par (147). Senior Olivia Wilkie is in fourth place at 4-over par after rounds of 72 (E) and 76 (+4).
"As senior leaders, Liv [Wilkie] and I want to help create a joyful environment and have great communication among the team," said Lydic of the goals for UR's two-person senior class this season.
Freshmen Addie Doroh shot rounds of 77 (+5) and 76 (+4) in her first college action and is tied for eighth place at 8-over par (152). Sophomore Caroline Thompson is competing as an individual and is tied for 18th place at 16-over par (160).
Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 AM. The Spiders will be seeking their third win in their last six events dating back to last season following victories at the Chris Banister Golf Classic in March and the Atlantic 10 Championship in April.
"I love the team I'm a part of and am so looking forward to where we'll go this year," added Lydic.
