RICHMOND, Va. – Spider basketball will look and sound better than ever at the Robins Center this season. In what represents the largest enhancement to the Robins Center since a complete renovation of the inner bowl was finished in 2014, Richmond Athletics announced Tuesday that it will install best-in-class in-arena videoboards and completely redesign the facility's sound system prior to the start of the 2025-26 men's and women's basketball seasons. The project is part of Richmond Athletics' ongoing efforts to revitalize and enhance the game day experience at Robins Center.
"In this new era of intercollegiate athletics, it continues to be a top priority for Spider Athletics to upgrade our venues to enhance the fan and student-athlete experience," said John P. Hardt, Vice President and Director of Athletics.
Over the next few weeks, the decade-old video boards will be replaced by thousands of square feet of new video displays by Daktronics, and the arena's sound system will be rebuilt by Washington Professional Systems (WPS).
In addition to the corner videoboards that hang beneath each of the four terraces in the Robins Center, courtside LED displays will also be replaced to ensure top-tier video quality throughout the arena.
Richmond will also install new scoreboards on the outer walls behind each basket. The scoreboards and videoboards will be linked to ensure accurate, identical scoring and timing data across all displays in the arena, giving Spider fans instant access to team and player statistics during games.
The arena's new audio system will deliver clear sound to every seat in the Robins Center by replacing existing speakers and subwoofers and installing a new operating system. WPS, which is performing the update, also installed a new audio system in Robins Stadium in 2022.
Work on the sound system, scoreboards, and videoboards is expected to be completed by the end of September. In addition, a new basketball team room, which will be used by the Spiders for pregame, halftime, and postgame meetings on game days, will also be ready for the season. Additional enhancements to the game day experience at Robins Center will be announced prior to the start of the season in early November.
Deposits for new season tickets are now being accepted for both the men's and women's teams. Existing season ticket holders have until September 15 to renew their tickets for the upcoming season.
Richmond's athletic facilities have consistently been ranked among the best in the nation. In August, The Princeton Review ranked Richmond No. 7 on its list of Schools With the Best Athletic Facilities.
