Spiders Extinguish Flames Behind Doogan’s 24-Point Performance

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Behind Maggie Doogan's 30th career game with 20 or more points, the University of Richmond women's basketball team picked up a 76-61 road win at Liberty Saturday afternoon to improve to 8-3 overall, while the Flames fell to 6-3. Rachel Ullstrom also surpassed 500 career rebounds in the game, becoming the 26th Spider to reach the milestone.

How it Happened
Liberty opened the scoring with a layup before Doogan responded with one of her own three minutes into the contest to tie the game at two. Liberty followed with another layup off an offensive rebound before Doogan sparked a 7-0 run, with help from Ally Sweeney and Ava Persichetti, to push the Spiders ahead 9-4. Liberty answered with a trey and a layup to tie the game back at nine, but Persichetti regained the lead for Richmond with a jumper. After exchanging baskets, a layup from Persichetti and a final jumper from Sweeney ended the opening 10 minutes with the Spiders leading 17-14.
Richmond opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run as Sam Dewey knocked down four free throws and Rachel Ullstrom added a jumper to give the Spiders a nine-point advantage, 23-14. Liberty ended the scoring drought with a layup, but Doogan immediately responded on the other end to make it 25-16. After the Flames hit a trey, Doogan and Alicia Newell combined for four points to push the lead back to 10, 29-19. Liberty scratched back within six, 31-25, with 3:31 left in the half before a trey from Doogan restored a nine-point cushion. The Flames then closed the half on a 6-0 run to pull within three, 34-31, but Sweeney capped the half with a jumper to send Richmond into the locker room leading 36-31.
Doogan opened the second half with a quick layup before a Liberty triple cut the Spider lead to four, 38-34. Dewey answered with a layup, but the Flames responded with four straight points to make it 40-38. After a brief exchange, Persichetti ignited an 11-0 Richmond run, highlighted by a Sweeney trey with 1:59 remaining and a pair of free throws from Doogan, to give the Spiders a 53-40 advantage. Liberty trimmed the deficit to nine with a layup and two free throws, but Rayne Wright closed the quarter with a layup to send Richmond into the final 10 minutes ahead 55-44.
Liberty opened the fourth quarter with a layup to cut the lead to single digits, but Sweeney responded with a triple. After a midrange jumper from the Flames, Richmond rattled off an 8-1 run to stretch the advantage to 17, 66-49. Liberty cut the lead to 14, 68-54, before Ullstrom converted a layup to make it 70-54. Following back-and-forth posession, Liberty used a 5-0 run to pull within 11, 72-61, but back-to-back buckets from Sweeney and Newell sealed the 76-61 road win.

Notes on the Game
- Maggie Doogan paced the Spiders with 24 points and flirted with a triple-double, leading the team with seven rebounds and seven assists. She also added three steals and a block to her stat line.
- Ally Sweeney and Ava Persichetti also finished in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively, marking Persichetti's second straight game in double digits. Ally Sweeney also committed zero turnovers on 6-of-8 shooting and 3-of-4 from three.
- Richmond shot 31-of-60 (51.7 percent) from the field and knocked down six three-pointers while going 8-of-9 (88.9 percent) from the free throw line. The Spiders totaled 28 rebounds, 16 assists, two blocks from Doogan and Tierra Simon, and 11 steals for a season high. Richmond also scored 27 points off 17 Liberty turnovers.
- Rachel Ullstrom surpassed 500 career rebounds, becoming the 26th Spider to hit the milestone.
- Richmond has now won three straight games at Liberty in Lynchburg and extended its overall win streak against the Flames to four. The Spiders also moved the all-time series record to 24-4 in favor of Richmond.
- The Spiders earned their first true road win since a 77-67 victory at Columbia on Nov. 15.
- The Spiders handed Liberty its first loss against an Atlantic 10 opponent. The Flames previously defeated George Mason and Duquesne.
