Spiders Soar Past Salukis to Reach 9-1
12/13/2025 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond Spiders needed every bit of the deep lineup they've used for the first six weeks of the season to beat Southern Illinois Saturday night at the Robins Center. After trailing by as many as nine in the second half, Richmond rallied to take control of the game, and then bounced back again in overtime to put the pesky Salukis away, 93-84.
A really hard-fought game, said Spiders coach Chris Mooney. I'm really pleased that we had enough tough plays that we made — especially in the second half and overtime — to win the game.
I think I've known we had a lot of heart, but I think this really showed it, said senior center Jonathan Beagle, who had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Richmond reached 9-1 on the season, making 2025-26 just the fifth season in program history Richmond has won won at least nine of its first 10 games. Six different Spiders scored in double figures, including freshman Aiden Argabright, who scored half of his team-high 18 points in overtime.
That was really impresssive, to have such command at such a young age. And confidence, said Mooney of Argabright.
He's going to be an amazing player. We see it everyday in practice, said Beagle.
Grad student Will Johnston finished with 17 points, including a pair of key jumpers in the final 90 seconds of regulation. His turnaround jumper at the second-half buzzer bounced off the rim twice, nearly winning the game in regulation for Richmond.
Senior Jonathan Beagle added a season-high 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds, starting a critical 16-0 Spiders run in the second half with a baby hook at the basket and ending it with a dunk and a spinning layup that brought the Robins Center crowd to its feet.
There was a part of the game where he had defensive rebounds, assists, baskets, all kind of in one segment. I thought he was just outstanding, said Mooney of Beagle. He's one of my favorite guys we've ever had here. He's among the best teammates we've ever had here. His team-first mentality and his willingness to give everything he has all the time is just incredible. He was great tonight.
I think we just needed a little bit of energy, said Beagle, who also spoke about his motivation when he comes into a game. It's just the pride I have in this school. I love this school. I want Richmond to win. I think it's different coming back in year two. I went through a lot of hard times here, so trying to win for this school as much as possible — that's the main goal.
Also reaching double figures were junior Jaden Daughtry (12 points), grad student AJ Lopez (11 points), and junior Mikkel Tyne (10 points) as six Spiders scored 10 or more points for the first time since Dec. 14, 2024 vs Belmont.
Hopefully this idea of having so many guys that help and contribute and can help us to win games just continues to gain momentum, said Mooney.
Richmond is now 7-0 at home this season, exceeding its home win total from all of last year (6-9). This is the sixth time UR has won its first seven home games since the Robins Center opened in 1972. The win snapped a streak of four straight overtime losses for UR and was Richmond's first OT win in the Robins Center since Nov. 14, 2019 vs Vanderbilt.
UR will head to Elon for a road matchup on Wednesday at 7 PM on FloSports before returning to the Robins Center for its final two non-conference games: Dec. 20 vs The Citadel and Dec. 28 vs Charleston Southern.
