Spiders Stun VCU Again, Clinch First Consecutive Wins Over Rams in More Than Two Decades

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches with a statement 4-2 victory over crosstown rival VCU on Wednesday at the Westhampton Tennis Complex. The win marked the Spiders' first back-to-back triumphs over the Rams since the 2004-05 seasons, following last year's Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinal win. Richmond improved to 11-6 on the year and 3-2 in Atlantic 10 Conference play while the Rams fell to 8-10 and 1-2 in conference play.
How It Happened
VCU grabbed the early lead by winning two of three doubles matches. Lara Bakhaya and Andrea Campodonico earned a dominant 6-1 win on court one, but the Rams claimed victories on courts two and three to take the opening point.
In singles, the Spiders responded with a surge. Bakhaya evened the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Mariam Ibrahim (VCU) on court three, followed by Claire Le Du's 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lea Malazdra (VCU) on court four to give Richmond the lead. After VCU tied things up with a win on court one, Campodonico came through with a gritty three-set win over T. Andrade Sabando (VCU) on court two.
Abby Lee sealed the match with her first collegiate clinch, outlasting Sara Alba (VCU) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on court six to secure the 4-2 win.
