Spiders Fall to George Mason, Will Open With Davidson at A-10 Tournament

RICHMOND, Va. — For the second straight game, the Spiders seemed to be on the verge of upsetting a team at the top of the A-10 standings. But for a second straight game, Richmond missed some crucial opportunities down the stretch and let a top-tier opponent escape with a win as George Mason outlasted the Spiders 64-60 Saturday at the Robins Center.
"We're really battling and fighting. The only frustration is we feel like we've been in this spot fairly often this season," said Spider coach Chris Mooney after the game, which dropped UR to 10-21 overall and 5-13 in the Atlantic 10.
The Spiders will be the 13 seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament and face 12 seed Davidson in the opening round Wednesday at 11:30 AM on USA Network.
Richmond led for nearly 25 minutes Saturday and built its lead to as many as nine early in the second half. George Mason was in front for 11 minutes and never led by more than four points. But the Patriots held UR without a field goal for the final four minutes to finish the regular season 24-7 and 15-3 in the Atlantic 10, good enough for a share of the league's regular season championship.
Richmond missed its final 11 three-point attempts over the game's final 12 minutes and let the Patriots attempt 16 free throws in the second half.
"There were some fouls we committed in the second half that I don't think we needed to," said Mooney. "Multiple ones on the rebound where if your positioning is better or you're a little bit more savvy you can compete for the rebound and not have it be a foul." George Mason finished with 16 second-chance points, twice as many as UR.
B. Artis White led Richmond with 16 points and four assists, while Mike Walz (10 points and a team-high six rebounds) and Collin Tanner (10 points) both reached double digits.
The loss came one week after Richmond led Dayton in the final seconds of regulation and the first overtime period before falling 74-64 in double OT.
"To say we've had really great resilience and guys have fought and those kinds of things, it sounds a little hollow if you don't have more wins," said Mooney. "Competing and improving and all those things — at this level, there's talent and coaching and size and all these things for all the teams — so it's not quite enough."
Richmond, already locked into the 13 seed at next week's A-10 Championship entering the day, was guaranteed an opening-round matchup with Davidson when the Wildcats lost to St. Bonaventure Saturday.
The teams will meet for the third time this season Wednesday at Capital One Arena, site of Richmond's run to the its second Atlantic 10 tournament title back in 2022.
"We want to go up there and be as fresh as we can and prepared as we can and hopefully play a great game on Wednesday," said Mooney.
