Washington – The No. 14 Spiders earned their first season with two wins over ranked opponents since 2022, securing a 13-12 victory at No. 13 Georgetown Saturday afternoon. The win also came as Richmond's first-ever over the Hoyas, who entered the game with a 4-0 upper hand in the all-time series.
The Spiders were led offensively by Aidan O'Neil (2 goals, 4 assists), Lucas Littlejohn (3 goals, 2 assists), Jack Ricciardi (3 goals) and Max Merklinger (2 goals), while Joe Sheridan, Gavin Creo, and Evan O'Neil each tallied a goal and Daniel Picart and Connor Kelly added assists.
Both teams exchanged goals in the opening quarter, with Richmond taking an early two-goal lead. Sheridan opened the scoring at 12:31, assisted by Aidan O'Neil, and just 44 seconds later, Evan O'Neil, Aidan's younger brother, scored unassisted at 11:47 after a Richmond faceoff win.
Georgetown responded with its first goal at 5:51, but Richmond quickly answered at 4:40. The Hoyas scored again at 3:19 during a man-up opportunity, but Richmond responded with a goal at 2:21, as Aidan O'Neil netted his first of the game off a pass from Picart. Georgetown added a third goal with just 21 seconds remaining in the quarter.
In the second quarter, O'Neil and Littlejohn dominated, connecting on all three of Richmond's goals. Georgetown pulled within one at 14:05, but Littlejohn quickly extended Richmond's lead with a goal off a pass from O'Neil at 13:05. The duo struck again at 5:29, with Littlejohn assisting O'Neil for a quick-stick goal that gave Richmond a three-goal lead. With just eight seconds left in the half, O'Neil returned the favor, passing to Littlejohn for another quick-stick goal, pushing the Richmond lead to four at the half.
The Spiders wasted no time after the halftime break. Jack Ricciardi, who was making his first career start, scored his second goal of the season at 14:23, then Georgetown responded at 13:14. Littlejohn then assisted Ricciardi for his second goal of the game, then Ricciardi completed his first career hat trick with a transition goal off a pass from close defenseman Connor Kelly, who recorded his first career point with the assist and pushed the Spiders lead to six.
Merklinger further extended the Spiders lead to the largest it would be all game with a goal at 8:45 in the third to push the Spiders out in front by seven, but Georgetown cut their deficit to six with another tally just 43 seconds later and added another to pull within five at 5:57, then added another unanswered at 2:41.
Then, Littlejohn and O'Neil teamed up for another goal, this one coming at 13:42 when O'Neil fed Littlejohn for his third and Richmond's last of the contest.
The Hoyas crept back in the fourth quarter, scoring the game's final four goals and out-shot the Spiders 10-4 in the frame. Georgetown added a goal with 5:32 remaining and another at 4:56 shortly after to make it a three-goal game, then added two quick goals and won the faceoff at 1:08 before a timeout was called. With one opportunity left to tie the game with just over a minute left to play, the Hoyas failed to connect on two last-moment shot attempts to send Richmond home with the win.
Richmond won the ground ball battle, outpacing Georgetown 41-31 and Mitchell Dunham led the Spiders close defense with six ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Zach Vigue recorded eight saves in the win.
