Richmond, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team dominated St. Bonaventure on both sides of the field Saturday, defeating the Bonnies 22-5 to kick off Atlantic 10 conference play. The Spiders controlled possession throughout, firing off a program-record 68 shots in a 35-point performance.
Scoring for Richmond were Ryan Spilman, Luke Meyer (2 goals), Evan Leonardo (1 assist), Xander Welty, Aidan O'Neil (2 goals), Joe Sheridan (3 goals, 1 assist), Henry Alpaugh, Leo Caine (1 assist), Jared Chenoy, Lukas Olsson, Lucas Littlejohn (3 goals, 3 assists), Porter Barnett, George Insley, and Max Merklinger (2 assists). Daniel Picart and Aidan Wooley contributed with assists.
On the defensive end, the Spiders stifled St. Bonaventure's offense, holding the Bonnies to just 21 shots, with 13 on goal. Richmond was responsible for a program-record-tying 17 of their 25 turnovers. Close defensemen Hunter Smith and Mitchell Dunham, along with freshman short-stick defensive midfielder Matt Jacobsen, led the way with three caused turnovers each, while the Spiders dominated the ground ball battle 40-28 as Jacobsen, along with long-stick midfielders Tommy Stull and Brayden Penafeather-Stevenson each collected four.
The Spiders are on the road next week as they head north to face Hobart on Saturday, April 5. Game time is set for noon.
