WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team jumped out to an early lead on William & Mary Tuesday and never looked back, capturing a 12-3 victory at Pulmeri Park.
Richmond, now 4-0 on the season, picked up the program's first victory in Williamsburg since 2011. The Spiders game against VMI originally set for Wednesday at Pitt Field has been postponed due to inclement weather headed to the region.
The Spiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Phil Bernstein doubled in Jordan Jaffe for the first run of the game before Bernstein scored on Brady O'Brien's ground rule double. Cole Palmeri picked up a sacrifice fly RBI in the third to push Jaffe home in the third, for a 3-0 lead.
Richmond pitchers Jackson Hinchliffe, Glenn Smith and Sawyer Duarte tossed four scoreless frames. Smith picked up his first career win, working around three hits and striking out two over two innings of work. Duarte got tagged for the Tribe's first run in the fifth.
Jaffe collected his second double and third hit of the game in the fifth. Bernstein traded places with Jaffe at second for the first run of the frame before stealing third and scoring on a Tribe throwing error for a 5-0 Spider lead.
In the sixth, DJ Pacheco reached on a walk, stole second and scored on a Tribe error that allowed Connor Larson to reach base. Aaron Whitley doubled off the wall to force in Larson prior to Whitley being tagged out at second for the final out of the frame.
To start the seventh, Jaffe picked up his fourth-straight hit and third double of the game while Bernstein followed with his fourth hit. O'Brien pushed in Jaffe with a sacrifice fly to push the Spiders lead to 8-1. Jack Arcamone followed with a walk while Pacheco reached on an error to load the bases with two outs. Aidan O'Keefe tallied a two-RBI base hit to right field to score Bernstein and Arcamone and extend the lead to 10-1.
O'Keefe collected a third RBI in the ninth when he hit in O'Brien from second with a base hit to right field. Grant Kennedy, after drawing a walk in his first collegiate plate appearance, scored on Whitley's sacrifice fly of the top of the left field wall.
Ryan Bilka took over for Duarte in the sixth. After he gave up a lead off base hit, Bilka retired six straight Tribe batters including four strikeouts over two scoreless frames on the mound. Dane Armson retired the Tribe in order, forcing a ground out and striking out two.
William & Mary scored two runs on two hits in the ninth off reliever Jason Shockley.
