Spiders Notch First Program win over No. 1 VCU in Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinal

ORLANDO, Fla. – In a match destined to become an instant classic, the No. 8-seeded University of Richmond women's tennis team upset the No. 1 seed VCU, 4-3, Thursday afternoon for the program's first ever win over the Rams courtesy of a match clinch from Polina Shitikova. The Spiders earned a spot in the A-10 Championship semifinal match, and will take on No. 4 Fordham at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

How it Happened
The Spiders began the match slow, as quick doubles wins on court two and three from VCU gave the Rams a 1-0 advantage heading into singles action. The Rams were able to go up 2-0, as Leonor Oliveira dropped a match on court three. Carly Cohen dropped her match on court two before the Spiders began the comeback bid with a 6-0, 6-4 court four win from Lara Bakhaya to put the Spiders on the board. Andrea Campodonico then posted a tight knit 7-5, 7-5 win over Karlova (VCU) on court No. 1 to bring the Spiders within one, 3-2. Elizabeth Novak came up clutch on court No. 5 with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 three set victory and Shitikova clinched the match for Richmond with a 2-6, 7-6 (2) 6-3 win over Ibrahim (VCU) to make history for Richmond women's tennis.
