RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 16 University of Richmond men's lacrosse team picked up its second win of the season, and first at home, in convincing fashion Saturday afternoon with an 18-2 victory over Big East foe St. John's at Robins Stadium
The Spiders (2-2) scored 13 unanswered goals during the second and third quarters, breaking open a 1-1 game and turning it into a 14-2 lead late in the third quarter. The Spiders' 18 goals are the second-most scored this season, trailing only the 23 goals scored in a win over Robert Morris.
Redshirt junior goalie Zach Vigue, the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, led the charge defensively, notching 15 saves through three quarters. Vigue was especially strong at the start, posting 10 of his 15 saves in the first half.
Senior Luke Grayum led 13 different Spider goal scorers on the afternoon with three goals and an assist. Freshman Lucas Littlejohn recorded his second multi-goal game of his career with two goals, while juniors Henry Alpaugh and Max Merklinger each added a pair.
The Spiders took a 2-1 after the first quarter on goals from Grayum and Ryan Thompson. Richmond broke the game open in the second quarter, out-scoring the Red Storm 5-0, taking a 7-1 lead into the locker room.
The Spiders kept the pressure on in the third quarter, out-scoring the Red Storm 8-1, including the first seven goals of the period. Alpaugh scored his two goals in a span of 14 seconds opening the second half scoring and the Spiders never looked back in the second-ever meeting between the two programs.
Richmond will be back in action next Saturday when it welcomes in Binghamton to Robins Stadium at noon.
