Offensive Power Lifts Spiders Over American Thursday Afternoon

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A pair of goals from graduate Molly Wierman and junior Sofia Mancino propelled the University of Richmond Women's Soccer team past American, 2-1, Thursday afternoon on the road. With the win, the Spiders improved to 2-2-3 overall while the Eagles fell to 0-4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first half, with back-and-forth action, Caitlin Sutton found an open Molly Wierman in the 52nd minute making a through run into the 18. Wierman took a touch to line up the shot and netted the goal past the American keeper. 30 minutes later, senior Lauren Waniel sent in a dangerous cross into the box, which went through a wall of AU players and found the foot of Sutton. Sutton found Mancino open in the penalty area, who one-touched the ball into the back of the net. American would put a goal back in the 84th minute, but couldn't find the equalizer as time expired.

The Spiders will look to close out non-conference action on Sunday as the team plays host to Charlotte at 2 p.m. at President's Field. Richmond will open Atlantic 10 play on Sept. 14 at VCU at 7 p.m.

- Gena Pike recorded her first start for the red and blue and recorded two saves through eight shots and 90 minutes.
- Casey Merz and Gwen Howell also played the full 90 minutes.
- Caitlin Sutton recorded a match-high two assists, good for a season-high, while bringing her career assists total to three.
- Wierman paced the team with two shots, two on frame while Marisa Snee and JoJo McShane also had looks on frame.
- Elyse Kimball picked up a yellow card in the 38th minute.
- Richmond recorded five shots, all being on target and three corner kicks.
