Spiders Drop Tough Decision to Charlotte on Senior Day

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Women's Soccer team put up two goals in each half, but the offensive power wasn't enough as the team dropped a 3-2 decision against Charlotte Sunday afternoon on Senior Day. With the loss, the Spiders fell to 2-3-3 on the year while the 49ers improved to 3-3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After the 49ers put up an Olimpico in the 24^th minute, the Spiders were awarded a penalty kick in the 42^ndminute off a foul inside the box. Hannah Antonick lined up the shot and put it past the UNCC keeper for the equalizer.

In the second half, Emma Shields sent a dangerous ball over the Charlotte back line which found the foot of Molly Wierman, who netted the goal to put the spiders up 2-1. Charlotte recorded the equalizer in the 78^thminute, and the go-ahead goal in the 83^rd minute for the win. Marisa Snee would put up one more shot on frame in the 87^th minute, but would be saved by the UNCC keeper.

Prior to the match, Hannah Antonick, Taylor Montague, Caitlin Sutton, Lauren Waniel, Elyse Kimball, Molly Wierman, Casey Merz, Logan Anderson and Gena Pike were honored for Senior Day.
Gwen Howell, JoJo McShane and Casey Merz played the full 90 minutes.
Hannah Antonick recorded her second career goal, first of the season.
Molly Wierman scored in her second-straight match and recorded her 10^th career goal, third of the season. She led the team with three shots on goal.
Emma Shields recorded her first career assist, first of the season.
Taylor Montague and Gena Pike split halves in goal. The duo recorded two saves each through 10 shots.
Antonick's penalty kick marked the first penalty kick this season for the Spiders, the team's first since 2021 (vs Rhode Island 10/10/21)
Richmond out shot Charlotte 13-10, with 10 shots being on frame.
Charlotte picked up two yellow cards in the match ('41, '78).

"Our past few matches we've been able to create more and more opportunities, which is good. Today, we didn't manage the game as well as we wanted to. The game kind of got away from us a bit, we were a bit fatigued, put ourselves into pressure and gave away a couple of balls which led to goals, which was disappointing."

UP NEXT
The Spiders will look to open Atlantic 10 action on Thursday, as the team takes on in-town rival VCU at Sports Backers Stadium at 7 p.m. The team will then play host to Saint Joseph's on Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. at President's Field at River Road.
