Spiders Secure Come-From-Behind Victory at Hobart; D. Madonna Eclipses 100 Career Goals

GENEVA, N.Y. – With a 5-2 deficit in the first quarter, the University of Richmond Men's Lacrosse team netted eight goals in the second quarter to secure a 20-15 comeback victory over Hobart Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Spiders improved to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play while the Statesmen fell to 5-7 and 1-3 in the A-10.
After Hobart jumped out to a quick 4-0 run, Dalton Young ended the scoring drought for the Spiders with his 18th and 19th goals of the season with 5:59 left in the quarter for a 4-2 deficit. Luke Graham followed the play two minutes later with a goal of his own while Aidan O'Neil brought the Spiders within one, 5-4, with goal number 18 on the year. After the Statesmen got one final goal off, the Spiders ended the first quarter down 6-4.
The Richmond offense came alive in the second quarter as Lukas Olsson, Luke Grayum, and Lance Madonna added their name to the score sheet to keep the Spiders within one, 8-7, with 8:36 left in the half. Later, the Spiders would score five unanswered points from efforts by Joe Sheridan and Jared Chenoy, who scored his first goal this season. Derrek Madonna recorded a hat trick over two minutes to score his 100th career goal and end the half with the Spiders on top 12-9. Madonna finished the game with four total goals, eight shots and five shots on goal.
Out of the break, Grayum recorded his 19th goal of the season while Madonna followed the play with his fourth goal of the game. Later, two more goals from Henry Alpaugh and Sheridan ended the third quarter with the Spiders still ahead 16-11.
In the final 15 minutes, Young and Grayum got a pair of quick goals off for an 18-11 Spider lead. Later, O'Neil added to the tally with 7:51 left in the game for a 20-13 lead, but the Statesmen began to scratch back with two goals under a minute for a five-point deficit. The Spider defense held strong, however, and took the game 20-15.
For the game, the Spiders outshot Hobart 51-57 and forced the opposition into 14 turnovers, aiding to 41 ground balls for the Spiders compared to 28 from Hobart. Zach Vigue, who collected the win, and Connor Knight combined for 17 saves while Chenoy went 15-33 inside the face off circle.
The Spiders will look to round out the regular season on Apr. 29 at 3 p.m. against St. Bonaventure at Robins Stadium while the Atlantic 10 Championship is slated for May 4-6, hosted by Richmond, at Robins Stadium.
