03/07/2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond, Va.— Junior Lance Madonna scored a season-high four goals as the Richmond Men's Lacrosse Team defeated Mercer, 11-6, at Robins Stadium Tuesday. The Spiders advance to 4-2 with the win.
Mercer (1-4) scored the game's first goal just 49 seconds into the contest, but it would be all Richmond in the first quarter as Dalton Young scored off a feed from Luke Grayum and Xander Welty scored his first career goal and first of the day off a pass from Young.
Mercer committed three penalties in the first quarter and the Spiders were able to capitalize on them, scoring a pair of man-up goals, first with Henry Alpaugh's unassisted tally followed by Lance Madonna's first of the game off another Grayum assist.
The Bears would score with two seconds left in the first quarter to give Richmond an early 4-2 lead at the first break.
Welty picked up his second career goal and second of the game just under five minutes into the second frame which was immediately followed by a Mercer goal just 40 seconds later to cut the Richmond lead to two. The Bears then brought the game as close as it would be since the beginning of the first quarter to make it 5-4 midway through the second.
From there, the Spiders would go on a four-unanswered goal run in the second and third quarters thanks to three Lance Madonna goals, including one via an assist by Joe Sheridan, the first of the freshman's career.
Sheridan then scored a goal of his own in the third to make it 9-4. Mercer would score twice more, but so would the Spiders with goals from Young and Aidan O'Neil to shut the door on the former SoCon foe Mercer.
Mercer controlled the face off game, winning 11 while Richmond won 9. While the Bears held Richmond to 3-of-13 on face offs in the first half, the Spiders were able to regain possession thanks to 12 off-target shots and 20 turnovers from the Bears.
Richmond's defense was led by Jake Saunders with five ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Jack Fabean and Braden McClure had two ground balls and two caused turnovers each. Zach Vigue recorded 10 saves, while Mercer's goalie came up with 12.
Mercer totaled 28 shots while the Spiders had the upper hand with 32 including 23 on cage. Richmond was nearly perfect on clears, going 27-of-28 while Mercer was 19-of-22. Ground balls were even as both teams picked up 26.
Up next, the Spiders head to Georgetown to take on the No. 20 Hoyas. Face off is set for noon.
