Spiders Overwhelmed by No. 1 Virginia
03/04/2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Charlottesville, Va.— The University of Richmond Men's Lacrosse team fell on the road at No. 1 Virginia Saturday, 25-8.
Richmond's goals came from Dalton Young (assist) and Lance Madonna (assist) with two each, Luke Grayum (assists), Max Merklinger (assist), Aidan O'Neil and Hunter Smith, but it wouldn't be enough as the top-ranked Cavaliers offense poured on 25 goals from 12 scorers and had a 16-4 advantage by halftime.
Virginia (4-0) jumped to an 8-0 lead just over ten minutes into the contest before Richmond (3-2) responded back with the next four to cut the UVA lead in half. After that, the Cavaliers went on a 10 unanswered-goal run to put the game on ice, giving UVA an 18-4 advantage less than four minutes into the third quarter.
The Spiders scored four more times from there, but it's slow start combined with Virginia's high-powered offense was too much as the Cavaliers didn't slow up, recording 22 more shots in the second half while Richmond came up with 14.
Virginia won the possession game throughout, winning 24-of-36 face offs and stopped the Spiders in their tracks in the ground ball contest, scooping up 52 to Richmond's 24. The Cavaliers were also 28-29 on clear attempts compared to Richmond at 19-22.
From the possession battle, Virginia was able to rattle off 51 shots including 33 on goal, while the Spiders took 28 with 18 on target.
Both teams used two goalies, with UVA's pair combining for 10 saves while Zach Vigue recorded six before Devin Craven entered midway through the third and made two.
The Spiders look to bounce back Tuesday when they host Mercer at Robins Stadium. Face off is set for 6 p.m.
