Spiders Drop Tough Match to Delaware Thursday Afternoon

RICHMOND, Va. – Despite huge singles wins from Carly Cohen and Polina Shitikova, the University of Richmond Women's Tennis team fell in a hard-fought battle, 4-2, against Delaware Thursday afternoon to begin a three-match home swing. With the loss, the Spiders fell to 4-13 on the year while the Blue Hens improved to 15-3.

In singles competition, Adel-Byanu Abidullina (UD) defeated Leonor Oliveira in a close match that went to three sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 on court one while Elizabeth Novak also narrowly fell to Eliza Askarova (UD) in another three-set match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 on court three.

Shitikova defeated Isabella Montana (UD) with a shutout score of 6-0, 6-0 on singles court six. Cohen was able to secure a huge win over Alina Vasilenko (UD) with a score of 6-3, 6-2 on court two while Claire Le Du was leading against Julieta Honrubia (UD) but left the match unfinished at 6-4, 5-7, 3-2.

In doubles, Marta Buendia and Le Du picked up the lone Spider win, defeating Alina Vasilenko/ Isabella Montana (UD) 5-4 on court two while the Blue Hens took the court one and three matches for the doubles point.

The Spiders return to conference play on Saturday, playing host to Fordham at noon while the Rams of Rhode Island will make the trip down to Richmond on Apr. 2 for a 9 a.m. match.
