Spiders Fight St. Joe’s to 0-0 Draw in A-10 Opener
09/15/2022 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team opened Atlantic 10 play Thursday night at Saint Joseph's. The Spiders fought the Hawks to a 0-0 draw to pick up a point, and they currently sit at 1-5-2 (0-0-1 A-10) this season.
"I'm really happy with our first half performance only allowing St. Joe's to get one shot off," said head coach Marty Beall. "The second half they had more of the ball for spells, but we battled hard for a point on the road which is important. Now, we need to recover and get our bodies ready to take on the No. 12 team in the nation Sunday afternoon at President's Field."
Goalkeeper Taylor Montague made three saves on the day for her second shutout of the season. She had crucial help from the backline, which allowed just nine shots from St. Joe's with just one in the first half, and came up with huge defensive plays including a block from Casey Merz in the 77th minute to keep the Hawks at bay.
The Spiders put up 11 shots, four on goal, and were led by Emma Coleman and Molly Wierman with three each.
Up next, the Spiders host A-10 preseason favorite and No. 12 Saint Louis Sunday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.
